My 10-Year Obsession with Breathing

Apr 18, 2024

by Peter Jacobson

Breathing has been an obsession of mine for the past 10 years. This obsession gets expressed in 2 areas.

The first area is overall health and well-being. In James Nestor's excellent book Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art, he says (and I agree):

"There is nothing more essential to our health and well-being than breathing."

These are more than just words to me. I've spent the last 5 years on a health journey towards greater respiratory health that has involved countless hours of treatments, thousands of dollars in out-of-pocket costs and 2 major craniofacial/oral surgeries. Was it worth it? Absolutely.

The second area of my breathing obsession is music making.

Breathing is such a confusing issue for so many air-moving musicians (i.e. wind players and singers).

10 years ago, I got fed up with all the confusion and made it my mission to figure out this breathing thing for myself. I went "all in" on breathing – reading dozens of books, thinking and writing deeply on the topic and doing tons of experimenting myself and with my students.

Though my breathing investigations are ongoing, my 10 years of study have yielded some very useful ideas and practices.

Over the new few weeks, I'll be sharing some of my breathing discoveries with you.

Who knows?

Maybe you'll get obsessed about breathing too. ;-)

More to come.
