Body Mapping for Musicians 101

An Introduction to the Structure & Design of the Human Instrument

As musicians, we move our body to make musical sound. The problem is a typical music education rarely includes instruction about the body and how it's designed to work best. This course will solve that problem by offering an holistic, Alexander Technique-informed look at how your whole body instrument can practice, play, sing and perform with maximum freedom, ease and efficiency.

Different than many anatomy courses that focus on learning the names of muscles and bones, in this course you will learn how to embody anatomical information through an exploration of the activities and systems that make up the larger activity of making music including:

  • Standing & Sitting – The Upright Support System in Action
  • Breathing – The Respiratory System in Action
  • Phonating & Articulating – The Sound-Making System in Action
  • Supporting & Balancing – The Legs in Action
  • Playing an Instrument – The Arms in Action
  • Practicing & Performing – The Whole Self in Action

Each of these activities will be a doorway into a whole world of learning about human anatomy, physical design and easeful movement. By the end of this course, you will have an accurate body “map” which will open up new possibilities for your music making and/or teaching.

Optional Enrichment Reading: The Body in Motion by Ted Dimon, Jr. (book not included in course tuition).

This 8-hour online course will be offered twice this summer:

  • July 24th & 25th
  • August 26th-29th

July Daily Schedule (both days)

  • 8-10am; 12-2pm Pacific
  • 9-11am; 1-3pm Mountain
  • 10am-12pm; 2-4pm Central

The MBMS Breathing Freedom Course

A Natural, Holistic & Musical Approach to Optimal Respiration

Breathing is a topic that confuses and mystifies a lot of musicians. This course aims to bring clarity and simplicity to the breathing process for air-moving musicians (singers and wind players) through natural, indirect and practical approach to breathing that focuses on the 3 C’s of Breathing Freedom:

Communicate the Music – the biological, social and musical aspects of breathing

  • Musical breathing vs. mechanical breathing
  • Inspired breathing – how the music itself can be a source of “inspiration” for exquisite phrasing
  • Practical exercises for long phrases, technical passages and working in the extreme registers

Cooperate with Your Design – learn the essential design features of the human instrument

  • The key features of the respiratory system
  • Coordinated sitting and standing – the prerequisite for free breathing
  • The role of the arms, legs, abs and diaphragm in breathing

Coordinate Your Whole Self – discover how to organize your mind and body for maximum efficiency

  • How to restore your torso to its natural state of elasticity and freedom
  • The whispered “Ah” – a simple yet profound exercise that can unlock optimal breathing coordination
  • An overall breathing coordination plan that brings everything together

You’ll also get access to a special bonus module on airway, craniofacial and respiratory health which contains cutting-edge science and timeless wisdom on how to optimize your airway health.

The course text will be The MBMS Breathing Freedom handbook (included in your course tuition).

The MBMS Peak Performance Course

Learn the 7 Steps of Performing & Auditioning Success

Performing is one of the ultimate joys of life. And performing artists live to perform; there is nothing better than the "high" of performing well for a live audience.

In great performers we see the following traits:

  • Magnetism – they draw the audience into a magical, musical world with their authentic and alive presence.
  • Confidence – their assuredness comes from having a clear plan for success that has been thoroughly studied and rehearsed.
  • Boldness – they aren't afraid to take risks and skate on the thrilling edge of failure and success.

In this course, you will learn how to generate those 3 qualities through a 7-step process:

  1. Renew Your Desire
  2. Transform Your Fear
  3. Tame Your Tension
  4. Amplify Your Constructive Voice
  5. Trust the 4 Pillars of Performance
  6. Perform to the Yes!
  7. Celebrate Success

As part of the process, you learn how to create, develop and refine performance plans that will reliably support you to experience greater confidence, expressiveness and joy in any performing or auditioning situation.

This 6-hour online course will be offered on August 7-9 and follow the same daily schedule all 3 days:

  • 12pm - 2pm Pacific
  • 1pm - 3pm Mountain
  • 2pm - 4pm Central
  • 3pm - 5pm Eastern

The Alexander Technique in Music Teaching

How to Implement the Core Principles of Integrative Music Education

The Alexander Technique is one of the most powerful methods of habit change and transformation available. Adding it to your teaching toolbox will leave you better equipped to do your teaching work even more effectively and powerfully.

In this course, you will learn how to implement the Alexander Technique into your teaching in two main ways:

Teacher Self-Care – learn how to sit, stand, speak, sing, play, demonstrate and teach with less effort and tension so you don’t feel exhausted after teaching. You will learn simple practices to skillfully meet the many demands of the music teaching profession with poise and grace. By taking care of yourself, moment-to-moment, you’ll serve as a role model for how your students can do the same. When teachers take care of themselves, everybody wins.

Student Instruction – music educators often don’t feel equipped to deal with the full range of issues and problems that students bring into the learning space, especially ones related to the body. This course will begin to show you how to clearly observe, analyze and work with your student’s habitual movement patterns that are preventing their fullest, freest musical expression. You’ll have practical tools and skills to help them free their bodies, clarify their thinking and improve at a faster rate.

The course text will be Integrative Music Education: The Music Teacher's Guide to the Alexander Technique e-Book (included in your course tuition).

This course will be offered August 5th & 6th using this daily schedule (for both days):

  • 8-10am; 12-2pm Pacific
  • 9-11am; 1-3pm Mountain
  • 10am-12pm; 2-4pm Central
  • 11am-1pm; 3-5pm Eastern

Course Tuition: $300; Early registration rate: $300
